Blowing It Scenario #26-Immigration, A Failure Of Economics And Diplomacy.

Where Do You Stand On Immigration?

Their are always two sides to every coin and at least that many sides to every debate. Currently the senate is in that process this week. They will be debating on immigration. On the one hand our country was built on immigration. Most every country at some point was. However this day and age you have countries that are literally connected to each other, yet the economic difference in each country might be staggering. On top of that you have massive failures in diplomacy creating war zones around the world. Where the innocent just want to get to a country they can just safely raise a family. Granted their are always going be a few bad apples that won’t obey the rules in their new country but their numbers are minute. And their actions are only compounded when they are ostracized from their new societal home. It’s the mammalian brain, the fight or flight response, and they already flew.

Let’s face it when people are pushed to their limit in their country of origin. They are going to go looking for a new home, it’s just human nature. I think that is where the debate begins. It’s a human right to explore this wonderful globe of ours. Yet we construct these imaginary lines to keep out the boogy men and to protect what is “ours.” Since we’re no quite there. We have to look at all the options. I don’t think we should just cast people out. I also know there are situations where the economics just can’t support an influx of new comers. So their does have to be checks and balances. Maybe a system of longer visa’s to see if the person wanting to immigrate to said country can assimilate into that society and contribute. That would need to be proceeded by a very thorough screening process. Assess them at the end of the visa, say 2 years, and if they are a productive member of society, give them ten. Then after ten they can receive tenure.

Or we could just open all boarders. Make every immigration like a sports trade. For every two of yours, we’ll give you two of ours. Create a waiting list. We really just have to make the legal process available to all. I always thought it would be cool to move to Norway but I know their is a process to it. I can’t just fly their and get myself a job and partake in all their social programs. That’s just not how it works and that is fair. They have their own citizen to look after and care for. I don’t think it’s too hard to understand the idea of stopping illegal immigration and it’s also not too hard to understand people wanting to leave their country for a better life either. We just have to find a common ground and hopefully the senate can make that happen.

Blowing It Scenario #25-Military Added 4000 Names To Gun Ownership Ban After An Attack.

It Was Only After One Of Their Own Forced Their Hand. When He Went On A Killing Spree In A Church In Texas.

In November of last year an ex U.S. Airmen went on a killing spree during a church service in Texas. We won’t say his name because quite frankly he doesn’t deserve to ever be part of the american consciousness. His memory and all like him, should be scrubbed from history. Every mass shooter should never have their name released in the news or their photo. They should be ghost. Worthless humans who tried to make a name for themselves in the worst way possible.

Somehow gun control has been the biggest hot button issue in the U.S. for thirty some odd years now. Yet we still can’t seem to get it right. Sure people should have the right to own guns. But their should be a very stringent psychological test, followed by an extremely through background check, followed by a mandatory gun school training program. We also need to monitor ammunition purchases like we do with fertilizer or cough medicines. It’s a red flag that should be accounted for. And here’s the kicker, every single gun serial number should be tied to that owner, so if your gun is involved in a crime. Then that gun owner should be held responsible for that crime. How’s that for responsible ownership? Guns would be locked up so tight they would never see the light of day. When the owner wanted to take it out. I guarantee he or she would keep a very close watch on that.

After the last mass shooting by one of their own. The military have finally removed over 4000 other names from the gun registry list. All names deemed unfit for gun ownership. Names that were never added to the system prior and could freely purchase guns to do whatever they please with. Men and women who were trained for combat but were too unstable or violent for the military, could have purchased guns. Because their paperwork was not filed by the military. Not to mention the person who shot people in the church in Texas. His name was on that list that was never filled. He should have never been able to purchase the gun he used.

All I’m saying it doesn’t end with just the military. I’m all for responsible gun ownership. Any responsible person would and should submit to stricter gun purchasing laws. Half of the people who go on mass shooting sprees have no criminal background. So what good is a background check then? We need more then just that. We need to weed out the psychologically unstable and the violent as well. We’re the only country in the world who has consistent displays of this kind of senseless violence. Let’s do more to prevent it. At least the military wised up and started to work towards future prevention.

Blowing It Scenario #24-Attacks On The Police-Failing To Understand They Protect And Serve

Cops Literally Keep Society In Line Without Them, Their Would Be Chaos.

Two Ohio police officers were shot and killed yesterday responding to a 911 hangup. It was a domestic abuse call, the officers were there just to make sure everything was alright and were gunned down upon arrival. Domestic violence are some of the most dangerous calls. The rage within the suspect is redirected towards the officers, who are there to protect the innocent lives. The wife in this case was so scared of her husband that she was hiding in the bushes to call 911 to inform them her husband shot the police officers responding to the call.

This is not an isolated incident. These kind of things happen often. Just in Washington State last month an officer responding to a break in during the middle of the afternoon was shot and killed in pursuit of the suspects. Why? Because a couple drug addicts, who already burden the system by giving absolutely nothing back to society, only taking, in the the form of robbing and stealing in order to get their next fix. Police Officers, are men and women who put their lives on the line every single day, just so we can walk to the store and not get mugged. So we can send our kids to school and not have to constantly worry if they’ll come home that day. So we can drive the streets at night and not have to worry about getting in a head on collision with a drunk driver.

If you think the police are bad or out to get you. First off you are wrong and need to take a look at your own actions. Second imagine the alternative. Pure anarchy. Every action a police officer takes is one to protect something. If you think a police officer is out to get you or trying to attack you. You just might be too ignorant to understand that you are the one posing a threat to something or someone. Some actions you do may seem so minute that they don’t warrant any counter action from an officer, that you might even question why an officer would target you. The reason being, prevention is the highest form of safety. If an officer can stop something before it escalates, they have done their job, and everyone gets to go home with their lives intact and have dinner with their families that evening.

It’s that ticket you received for speeding in a school zone, it’s that DUI arrest. It’s that questioning when you look out of place in a nice neighborhood, heck any neighborhood. It’s that knock on the door when their are loud noises or yelling coming from your home. These small actions may have prevented a child from getting hit by a car, a multi-fatal accident on the highway, a double homicide break in your neighborhood, or a murder suicide domestic dispute. Who know how many crimes these man and women truly prevent in any given day. Just so we can live happy, healthy lives. We live in one of the most peaceful times in human history, and if you don’t believe so, read “The Better Angels of Our Nature.” The police are a big reason we have that peace. So if you see an officer of the law, even if it’s when he or she is giving you a ticket. Be sure to thank them for there service, because even if at times it doesn’t seem like they are protecting you, they are protecting someone around you. Which is also contributing to your peace and safety.

Blowing It Scenario #23-Cleveland Cavaliers Were Blowing It This Season Then They Traded Everyone Away

It Begs The Question Is It Coaching What Makes A Great Team Or Is It The Personal?

Most of the time it’s both. A symbiotic relationship between players and coaching that improves the teams and the players over their time together. However it is my belief that coaching plays the biggest role in the success of players and their teams. I’ve had many disagreeable conversation over the topic of Phil Jackson being one of the all time greatest coaches in history. Friends will always argue that he had Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen and then Kobe and Shaq. Sure he was fortunate enough to be able to coach some of the best players in NBA history. But he also had the burden of coaching the best players in history. These men knew they were great and had personalities to match. Coach Wooden won championships for 10 straight years with a revolving cast of characters. Coaches have to find ways to best work with these personalities so the can cohabitate and win together.

Everything, be it sport, business, parenting, everything transcends from the top down. If you have a parent with poor eating habits and a lethargic lifestyle most likely their children will adopt that lifestyle. If you have a you have a CEO who is passionate and driven most likely those their employees will be passionate and driven too. And if you have a coach who loves the game, is a student of the game, expects the best from themselves and from his team. Who competes at the highest level day in and day out and knows how to work with the personalities of the team. Then you have a successful formula.

Personnel plays a massive role as well. I would be discrediting every championship player, every employee, every child, pretty much everyone who has ever contributed anything. I’d be discrediting all of them, if I did not acknowledge that their is no team, no successful business, nothing, without the personnel. They are essential in every possible way. Cleveland Cavaliers and their personnel have had a championship caliber team since Lebron James stepped foot in that arena some 15 years ago. This is the first season a Lebron lead time has really struggled to get the pieces to fit together. This season started poorly for them, when someone up top made the decision to trade away one of their best players. Not only one of the best players in Cleveland, one of the best players in the league. And they traded him in spite of having a year left on his contract. Then chose to bring in a bunch of big names who have had great careers in the past but their time and abilities have been waning. Coach Lue and the best player in the league, Lebron James, who you could argue is a player coach himself. Just couldn’t get the team to mesh well and produce results consistently.

So what did they do. They did what everyone should do when atrophy sets in and we begin to experience catastrophic failure. We remove it, we do as nature does, when a virus infects an organism. Isolate it and you either cut off the infection, kill it off, do whatever you have to do to protect the overall health of system. If you don’t, both could go down. This is simply an analogy as to what you should do when you reach terminal failure in business or in life. I’m not saying that the players were an infection. They just didn’t fit into that system. So Cleveland was smart about it and they traded out about half the team that were under performing and brought in new personal to try to help them get better. And I believe it’s the right move, because when it all boils down to it, a team is simply made up of good personnel lead by great coaching.

Blowing It Scenario #22-Hypocrisy

Blowing It Through The Act Of Claiming To Have Moral Standards Or Beliefs To Which One’s Own Behavior Does Not Conform.

Hypocrisy runs rampant in our society. More often then not though it comes from people of positions of power and influence. From the celebrities touting their newest cause, one that is preferably popular at the moment. They’ll take their stand on the issues, while providing years of previous hypocritical actions to fully negate their new found worthy actions. To the patriarchs of the family. We have all been hypocritical at some point, especially parents. We’ll tell children not to drink, don’t do drugs, eat your vegetables, never say a bad word and so on and so forth. Meanwhile we’re at the dinner table, eating a porterhouse steak (no veggies of coarse) and washing it down with a cold beer. Cursing like a sailor as we’re finally heading the door to party all night long. As much as it seems harmless enough as long as you continue telling your kids, “don’t do what daddy does.” It really isn’t, you will have to lead by example, not by hypocritical suggestions. Parents are and will always be the main role models in their children’s lives. It’s not do as I say not as I do. It really is do as I do.

Now government, government is where the real demons of hypocrisy hid. The men and women who make the rules we must abide by. Often can’t seem to stick to their own moral high ground. From the anti LGBT Republican Senator caught have gay sex in his office. To the most recent story that came out today about the Utah Republican Representative who fought for tougher penalties against prostitution while allegedly soliciting sex from a prostitute. Using tax payer money to buy hotel rooms to hook up with said prostitute. That’s not only hypocrisy, these are crimes. Not just the soliciting of sex either. I’m talking about the outright theft of tax payer money. He’ll probably just get a slap on the wrist and all we be forgotten.

Tax payer theft is so prevalent yet we really don’t know how deep it goes. The governing body that polices it, is the same people in charge. I could be wrong though, all elected officials could be noble in their pursuits, except for just a few bad apples. However if you run for office on a certain message and when you get elected because of that message. Then go on to disregard everything you stood for, that is a form a tax payer theft. When you take air force one to travel Europe on your honeymoon and call it a “business trip” that is a form of theft. When you want to put a 24 million dollar toilet on that same jet. That is a form of theft. And when you stand for fiscal responsibility yet burden tax payers unnecessary spending that is hypocritical theft.

If you say you want smaller government make it happen, start with your own job. Give your bloated salary and all the benefits back to the people. I’m also not saying you should be able to except money from a business, yours or any others, while writing laws that benefit that business either. As a matter of fact no one should write laws that directly effect a business or company they have ever been associated with. Law makers should make the average american salaries only then will it remove the hypocrisy. Put a cap on all campaign contribution. Since clearly that presents a major conflict of interest, when a lawmaker receives millions from one donor. A donor cap and salary cap may help to level the playing field. Because as of now how can an elected official who makes a couple hundred thousand a year with full unlimited benefits, who can take up to six months off. How can they understand the plight of the mothers and fathers who work might work two jobs each just to put food on the table and maybe cover medical expenses and receives no time off? The system is already set up to be ripe for the abuse of power. And isn’t that often what hypocrisy is? An abuse of power.

Blowing It Scenario #21-Twitter’s Previous Failures Finally Amount To Success

Twitter Posted It’s First Ever Profit Since Going Public In 2013.

Business is sometimes a battle of attrition. You grind it out every single day and you can still lose money at the end of that day. That has been the story for Twitter. A company known and used all over the world. Twitter hasn’t turned a profit since 2013 but all that changed with it’s most recent quarter. Nearly 5 straight years of steady losses and it took till now to turn the corner. Which is a beautiful display of failure in action.

Hell most of us after two years of failing to make any profit would probably say to ourselves, “well this clearly isn’t working.” Maybe we wouldn’t even make it two years, some of us just a few months, others a few weeks and many of us still, just a few days without seeing results can send us packing it in on our goals and dreams. We usually, more often then not, simply hang up our hats and move on to the next project that will hopefully provide greener pastures in the future. Or maybe even a path of lesser resistance.

Sometimes the correct move when your flying in the face of failure is to stick it out. To keep adjusting coarse slightly till you find a working formula. It may take a year or two, or even five, maybe longer. However I will say it is my firm belief if there is no turn around after too many years you will have to face your extinction event. Just don’t give up too soon and try not to lose all that is good around you in the process either.

Twitter also has another thing going for it in the prevention of failure. One of the greatest factors of all when you are trying to push through those breaking points. That is, that Twitter had thousands of people relying on them. Thousands of workers and investors with families of their own to take care of and provide for. Thousands of people trying to affect change around the world through their platform. This is the main thing you can’t dismiss when you want to quit. Who is relying on you? If we become other oriented, meaning we put others first and we continue to grow that base. Before you know it hundreds of thousands could be relying on you too. If you have just one, or a thousands. In that moment, you will refuse to fail too.

Blowing It Scenario #20-Military Parades

Nothing Says Peace And Love Like A Couple Of Nukes Driving Down Central Avenue.

I’m not one for militaristic displays of power. This, “mines bigger then yours” mentality. Why don’t we get our junk out and measure that while we’re at it. What is the real point? Is it to rally the country behind the spectacle? I do believe everyone in the country is already in full support of our troops and thankful for their sacrifices. Is it to display one person’s glory? That they can set out with this might and conquer the world. Or is it to get more recruits to the cause? I really don’t know the answer.

When I think of these parades it always brings up haunting memories of the old dictatorships. Hitler, Stalin, Lennon, those guys sure could put on a show. All were very good at displaying their power to the world through parades and propaganda. And then they went on to display that power in the form of war around the world. Most of us were fortunate enough to not have to witness the atrocities of that era. But as the last of those who had to suffer through that time, die off. The great forgetting begins, no one that was around then, has the platform any more and if we don’t know our history, we could be doomed to repeat it.

We already have attacks on free speech in the form of what powerful people call fake news. If it’s not agreeable it’s fake, right? However, in our current news environment, how are we suppose to get real news? When all of our news outlets are owned by about 5 major networks. News is only referred to as propaganda when it’s owned by 1 government body. Yet we’re strikingly close to that. We could be told anything and believe it. Heck, I’m writing this article because the news told me that our president might bring back military parades. It could be a 100% news fabrication for all I know. The way we receive news can only get more obstructed in the future. Since an un-elected government body struck down Net Neutrality. Opening the way for about 4 major companies to control what your able to view on the web. It seems like the FCC thinks it’s the Supreme Court. Just a handful of people making laws and rules that effect every area of our lives. Never with any ulterior motives. The FCC chairmen, didn’t recently work for a major company that stands to gain the most from his actions in government. No conflict of interest there, that I can see. Now if you haven’t noticed these last few remarks are sarcastic in tone, and I digress.

Parades are wonderful when done right. You bring the family out with lawn chairs and blankets to sit on the side walk. While well designed floats carrying beauty queens and grand marshal’s, line the streets. Others don fun festive costumes. Candy and trinkets are thrown to the audience, while marching bands march and dancers put on a exquisitely choreographed display in procession. Or parades where giant balloon floats are carried through the streets to celebrate giving thanks for all that we have. Why do we need anymore then this? These are the parades of my generations. The ones I love. The ones of peace, joy, and togetherness.

Blowing It Scenario #19-Pollution, An Ecological Failure

A Study Just Came Out That Our Earth’s Ozone Layer Is Failing To Heal Itself.

I’m no scientist but I do believe we live in a time of great paradox. On one hand we have a system that can only sustain itself, on perpetual growth. That growth more often then not, aggressively challenges nature for new, ever expanding resources. While adding even more issues ecologically down the road when those resources inevitably need to be discarded. Ocean’s are acidifying, polar ice caps are melting, species are dying out, and now we know the ozone layer is failing to heal.

What are the answers? I honestly don’t know and I fear some of the alternatives. It seems like one system must give way to the other. We are a species that will attempt to insure our survival at all cost, sometimes at the peril of other species. As those species die off though, we must work to get more inventive. Or the better solution would be to put forth efforts to save the planet and it’s species. Which may come at the expense of growth. The concern is how does that look? Is it dystopian by nature with population controls and water wars? Or can we engineer inventive ways to create world changing products, that rob nothing from the environment and possibly even give back to it in the process. None of which do I believe will happen in the immediate future. But I’m hopeful for the latter.

We can now grow far more plants per square foot indoors and through hydroponics then we could on the same acreage of land outdoors. I do have some concern in that process. That growing soil-less food it’s lacking the abundance of nutrients nature provides through the soil. Never the less it’s a step in the right direction to feed an ever growing population, that uses far less water and has zero need for pesticides use. However the best possible solution I could think of, would be if everyone maintained there own garden. However in that scenario, the food industry would have to give way. And the people would have to step up and do the work. Would the industry be willing to part with such profits? Would the people maintain their crop or would they allow there mini farms to fall into disarray?

Scientist now work towards lab grown meats by using stem cells from cows. Which are then allowed to grow and multiply on a nutrient rich solution. Something some may think is gross but it’s a similar process in nature. Probably the best answer would be to eliminate meats from diets all together but I don’t think many will sign on to that proposal. We’re starting to work towards alternative energy with solar panels, wind turbines, hydro electricity. None of which are completely above taxing the environment in some form or another but it is far better then burning fossil fuels. I do believe we’re working in the right direction but we have a very long ways to go. I do hope we finally crack the code in this process and create a system of harmony because the alternative could be far worse.

Blowing It Scenario #18-Super Bowl Team’s Defenses Blew It. Mainly The Patriots.

The Super Bowl This Year Had A Ton Of Offense, Just Not Much Defense.

The Super Bowl was played last night between the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots. If you’re anything like me you loved watching that game. I love a great shoot out, especially between the best two teams in the league. And let me tell you, we were rewarded this year. We had an NFL game with a whooping 74 points scored and both teams combined for over a thousand yards of offense. I’ve probably never seen a more beautifully coached game from an offensive standpoint. We had team go for it on a incredibly well designed forth down play. Where the Quarterback faked an audible and then went on to score a receiving touchdown, when the running back took the snap in the wild cat formation pitched it back to the eagles the receiver on a end around and the receiver then threw the touchdown to the Q.B. It was a bold move and one I was very happy to have witnessed.

However, was this game just the greatest display of offense or did the defenses just completely not show up. I believe their were about two total turnovers in the game and probably as many punts. On the turnovers one was a complete gimme. When the eagles receiver juggled the ball right into the outstretched hands of a Patriots player on the five yard line. Had that not happened Eagles may have won by a much greater margin. Then their was only the strip sack by the Eagles defensive line men at the most crucial time of the game with just over 2 minutes remaining. We have all witnessed the many great and quite frankly insane comebacks Tom Brady has engineered over the years especially in Super Bowls. With Eagles only up by 5 at the time, I have no doubt in my mind had that turnover not happened we might have been looking at a 6th Tom Brady and Bill Belichik Super Bowl victory. But other then those two turnovers the defenses looked a little on their heels most of the game. They did get great pressure on Tom but it just wasn’t consistent enough to truly throw him off his game. Patriots got very little pressure on Nick Foles.

As for Tom, some commentators want to put the blame squarely on his shoulders, but he not only keep them in the game being down an average of ten points consistently throughout . He brought them back to take the lead by one point in the forth. Had the defense not blown it, they could have held on to win. But they let the onslaught of a magnificently coached Eagles offense lead by Doug Pedersen and a brilliantly executed Eagles offense by Nick Folk continue for one final drive. A drive capped off by a diving touchdown from Zach Ertz that nearly could have resulted in a non catch since there was ball movement when he hit the ground.

I’d like to quickly address that terrible failure of a catch rule. That the NFL instituted and absolutely blew it with this season. A rule that saw a player nearly lose his leg earlier in the season making a touchdown catch (Zach Miller). Only to have it overturned by the refs because in his agony he placed the ball down on the ground next to him in the endzone. It’s the rule that I think was the biggest blowing it move by the NFL in a long time and if it’s not changed this off season. I don’t know if I’ll watch the sport as avidly as before. I’m just one guys opinion though. I’m happy the refs didn’t make those bad calls in this game. There were two Eagles touchdowns in the game where their was ball movement, that could have very well been overturned had the refs stuck adherently to the new rules. Which I’m happy to say the refs didn’t effect the outcome of this game. It was a great Super Bowl with I’m sure many other failures I’ve overlooked. Some commercials might be deemed failures especially the complete network blackout, some might think the half time show had aspects to it that failed. As for me the biggest issues and failures of the night were on defense.

Blowing It Scenario #17-Amtrak Blew It Again With Yet Another Crash

How Are Trains Getting Into So Many Accidents?

I love a good train ride, hundreds of thousands of pounds of steel gently coasting along two 4 inch rails. Inertia carrying the momentum of its weight to the point it takes miles to begin a stop. These things are quite literally guided on tracks to your next destination. I honest can’t understand the continual failure behind these modern marvels.

There is a phenomenal book by Matthew Syed called Black Box Thinking. Where he discusses the line of thinking in the airline industry. That has lead to a drastic reduction in air disasters over the years. You rarely ever hear of a plane crash, let alone two in quick succession. It’s because in that industry, every incident or failure is painstakingly scrutinized in an effort to limit or altogether eliminate those air disasters in the future. Yet so few industries adopt this line of thinking, no one wants to except blame. But it is so necessary for becoming better in all areas of your field. Especially so when innocent lives are on the line. When you are a bureaucracy like Amtrak I imagine it’s not easy to pin point where these cracks that are causing the dam to break are.

Is Amtrak looking to put itself out of business? They are a bureaucratic government entity, which I believe I once read, has consistently loss money year over year. A good way to shut down a business would be to have multiple crashes with a few months of each other. Are they hiring inexperienced train conductors who are bound to fail at some point? That is definitely an area you don’t want to fail in, when others lives are on the line. You should have so much training in the beginning, that you get those learning curve failures out of the way before you ever have another passenger. I seems like they might be opening the door to a liquidation event. It would make sense to outsiders to now privatize and sell off the assets to the highest bidder and essentially giving the corporate buyer a near monopoly on cross country passenger trains.

How is it we live in a day and age where cars can nearly safely drive themselves with all the obstacles faced on the road at any given time of day. Planes can fly themselves. And yet we haven’t built an auto pilot for a train? All it would have to do, is simply guide itself along at the right speed. Heck, their guidance system is already firmly nailed into the earth.
